Primary Focus

What is an Enrolled Agent?

An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a federally authorised tax practitioner who has demonstrated technical competence in the field of US taxation. Unlike CPAs or Attorneys — whose tax practice is often a subset of a broader credential — EA is exclusively focused on taxation.

The credential is awarded by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a bureau of the US Department of the Treasury. EAs are the only tax practitioners with a credential directly granted at the federal level in the United States.

EAs have unlimited practice rights: they can represent any taxpayer — individual or business — before any office of the IRS, including audits, collections, and appeals. This distinguishes them from tax preparers, who have limited representation rights.

Federal licence, not state-based — EA is a US federal credential. Unlike CPA, which requires state licensure, EA is granted nationally and recognised across all 50 states and internationally.
No degree requirement — You do not need a degree in accounting, commerce, or any other field. If you can pass the 3-part SEE exam and clear the IRS background check, you qualify.
Unlimited IRS practice rights — EAs can represent any client before any office of the IRS — audits, collections, appeals, or any other IRS matter.
Fastest US tax credential — Most candidates complete all 3 parts of the SEE within 6 to 12 months, making it significantly faster than CPA USA or ACCA.
Strong demand in India — India’s US tax outsourcing industry — Big 4, KPO firms, and MNC tax teams — has significant demand for EA-certified professionals.

Why Choose EA?

Eight reasons the Enrolled Agent credential is a strong career move from India.

🌟
No Degree Required
Unlike CPA, CMA USA, or ACCA, EA has no minimum educational qualification. Any 12th-pass candidate or working professional can pursue it.
Fastest US Credential
Most candidates complete all 3 parts in 6 to 12 months. No work experience requirement for certification — pass the exams and you are credentialed.
🌟
Federal Licence, Nationally Valid
EA is a federal credential — it is not state-specific like CPA. One licence gives you practice rights across all 50 US states and internationally.
📈
Strong Demand in India
India’s US tax outsourcing industry is growing rapidly. Big 4 firms, KPO companies, and US MNCs in India actively seek EA-certified tax professionals.
👥
Unlimited IRS Practice Rights
EAs have unlimited rights to represent any taxpayer before any IRS office. This is a privilege not available to unenrolled preparers or basic tax advisors.
📚
Focused Curriculum
EA covers exactly what US tax professionals need: individual tax, business tax, and IRS representation. No extraneous subjects — deep expertise in a valuable niche.
💰
Excellent ROI
EA has relatively low examination fees compared to CPA or CMA USA. Combined with a short study window and strong demand, the return on investment is compelling.
🚀
Stepping Stone to CPA
Many candidates use EA as a first step toward CPA USA. The US tax knowledge from EA directly applies to CPA’s REG and TCP sections, reducing total study time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the EA credential and the exam.

Can I do EA without a commerce or accounting degree?
Yes. EA is one of the few professional credentials that has no minimum educational requirement. The IRS does not require a specific degree or any degree at all. Any candidate who can pass the 3-part SEE exam and clear the IRS background check can become an Enrolled Agent.
How is EA different from CPA USA?
EA is exclusively focused on US federal taxation and IRS representation. CPA is a broader credential covering accounting, auditing, and financial reporting in addition to tax. EA is faster and cheaper to obtain, and has no degree requirement. However, CPA has broader market recognition for non-tax roles. Many professionals hold both credentials.
Is EA useful in India if I don't plan to move to the USA?
Yes, significantly. India has a large and growing US tax outsourcing industry. Big 4 firms (Deloitte, EY, PwC, KPMG), specialist US tax KPOs, and MNCs with US operations all hire EA-certified professionals based in India. You do not need to be in the USA to use the credential professionally.
When can I appear for the SEE exam?
The SEE is available from May 1 to February 28 each year. Testing is not available in March and April when Prometric and the IRS update the exam for the next season. You can schedule each part independently and do not need to take them in order.
How long does each passed part remain valid?
Each passed part of the SEE is valid for 2 years. You must pass all 3 parts within a rolling 2-year window. If a part expires before you complete all three, you will need to retake it.
What are the renewal requirements after becoming an EA?
EAs must complete 72 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) every 3 years, including a minimum of 16 hours per year and at least 2 hours of ethics per year. Renewal is through the IRS PTIN renewal process.
